PUBLIC PRESENTATION & DEBATE Design by Algorithm vs. Design by Drawing: Some Reflections on Actual Design Process 28.05.2015 | METU Faculty of Architecture, Kubbealtı Lecture Hall

After the first design workshop conducted by Dr. Olgu Çalışkan, Y. Baver Barut and Gökhan Ongun at METU Faculty of Architecture in May, 30th – June 1st 2014, the PUD group initiated a public debate on the issue of the fundamental difference between analogue and algorithmic design thinking in urbanism. Based on the actual findings of the workshop with a systematic analysis of the design processes pursued by these two techniques, the underlying cognitive structures two modes of design thinking in urbanism was opened up to the collective discussion. With a very pleasing attendance of the public, an intensive debate has been pursued in consideration of the different (i.e. practical, cognitive, pedagogical) dimensions of the given methodologies. At the end of the presentation and discussions the need for further researches to integrate parametric methods into urban design processes within near future.
