‘Talking Tissues’: Collective Formation of Urban Fabric

Having initiated the first design research on cohering the fragments of urban formation in Spring 2016, PUD Studio revisits the idea of associative control of urban form within the incremental nature of urban complexity. Acknowledging the self-critiques against the previous design solution proposed with the urban project in 2016, the following studio focuses on devising a better algorithmic system providing the desired morphological unity while ensuring the co-existence of the characteristic parts while transcending the common perception of parametric design as ‘big architecture’. On this basis, the design research studio has first designed an algorithmic system called ‘parametric morphology’ to analyse the neighbouring fabrics to cohere with the new development. After defining the four basic types of urban patterns parametrically, the design groups compose them generatively within a control system.
