UD555 Parametric Urban Design
Parametric control of the peri-urban formation
In coordination with METU MUD Studio, Fall 2017 PUD Studio took the issue of peripheral urban formations into consideration for the design research studies to be conducted within UD555 Parametric Urban Design course during the current semester. The course aimed to study on developing various parametric models of land development with a diverse settlement typologies generated over the vast urban peripheries. To be located in the specific context of Döşemealtı, the growing peripheral county of Antalya, the contextual design experimentations were tended to simulate alternative growth patterns under certain spatial and functional parameters. The main intention of the studio has been to develop alternative formation strategies to consolidate the very loose urban fabric of the city and to integrate agricultural production with urban fabric to support the development of permacultural communities as a sustainable settlement typology. In order to suggest some alternative forms and programs, the design groups have been encouraged to come up with hybrid typologies in the way that the settled dichotomies between rural vs. urban, and center vs. periphery would be dissolved.
